SUPER EAGLE (G408) jumped awkwardly and then from the outside barrier was shifted
across behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding his riding making
the Home Turn and in the early part of the Home Straight, rider stated that from the
outside barrier he was instructed to ride his mount in a conservative manner in the early
stages. He said after settling back in the field near the 500M he elected to remain racing
behind a runner with a view to following that runner into the race and obtaining a run to
the inside of another runner which he had expected to give ground. He stated that his
decision to do so was influenced by the fact that his mount was racing first up for 101
days and he did not wish to expose his mount too soon. He added that when the latter
runner continued to respond to its rider’s efforts he then became held up behind the
aforementioned runner between the 400M and the 250M and once he shifted to the
outside of the latter runner his mount finished the race off well. After considering his
explanation the Stewards advised rider that, in their opinion, his better option would have
been to shift to the outside of the aforementioned runner near the 500M to follow the
latter runner into the event to provide his mount with clear running sooner than what it
obtained on that occasion - Race 505. |

HO HO STAR |

HO HO STAR (H291) shortly after the start got its head up when being shifted across
behind runners from a wide barrier. When questioned, rider stated that from a wide
barrier the instructions were to endeavour to hold a midfield position but also to attempt
to position himself close to the rail as his mount races best in that position. He said in the
early stages when positioned to the outside of a runner he was obliged to settle slightly
further back to avoid covering additional ground. He added making the Home Turn his
mount commenced to travel reasonably well and after entering the Home Straight he was
reluctant to place his mount under full pressure as he wanted to give his mount the
opportunity to work into the race. He said approaching the 300M after shifting to the
inside of another runner he then placed his mount under full pressure where it finished
the race off reasonably well. When questioned if there was an opportunity to ride his
mount with more vigour between the 400M and the 300M rider stated that he felt his
mount was travelling well at that point and had he commenced to ride it along too soon it
would not have finished the race off as well as it did. Trainer confirmed the instructions
issued and advised that in the circumstances there was the opportunity to ride the horse
with more vigour than rider did in the early part of the Home Straight. After considering
his explanation and also taking into account the early and middle stages of the event were
run outside of standard time, the Stewards advised rider that, in their opinion, he had
made an error of judgement in not riding his mount with more vigour in the early part of
the Home Straight - Race 583. |

EVER SMART |

|
EVER SMART (J179) when questioned, rider stated that when holding an on-pace
position in the early stages he was obliged to make use of his mount when caught wide in
an attempt go forward. He said when unable to cross runners to his inside he elected to
restrain his mount making the turn near the 1000M to obtain a position with cover. When
questioned regarding his riding rounding the turn and in the early part of the Home
Straight and as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of a runner,
rider stated that given the hard run that his mount had sustained in the early stages, he
was reluctant to improve around runners on the Home Turn and for that reason he
remained racing behind that runner. He added when that runner shifted out approaching
the Home Straight he then attempted to obtain clear running to the inside of that runner
and to the outside of another runner. He said when that run closed his mount was held up
for clear running between the 300M and the 150M. Rider agreed with the Stewards that
he had made an error of judgement on the Home Turn by not shifting to the outside of the
aforementioned runner to obtain clear running - Race 554. |

FUNG (J101) after travelling a short distance was steadied when crowded. After the
event, rider reported that the instructions were to take up a forward position but after
being crowded shortly after the start her mount did not show sufficient pace to hold a
more forward position which she attributed to the All Weather surface being rated "Wet
Slow”. Post-race vet inspection did not show any significant findings. Finished tailed out
and performance was considered unacceptable. Has since performed to the satisfaction of
the Stewards in a barrier trial and passed an official vet exam - Race 418. |
