Racing Incident Report
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that TOWARDS SUCCESS had blood in its mouth. TOWARDS SUCCESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race.
After being loaded into the barriers, ALLOY STAR became fractious and attempted to get out under the front gates. ALLOY STAR then became wedged between the front gates. ALLOY STAR was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, ALLOY STAR was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, ALLOY STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
VECTOR was slow to begin.
CARRY THE DIAMOND shifted out at the start and bumped SUNNY AND GOLD.
GOOD BEAUTY stumbled at the start.
MASTERWORK began awkwardly and then was crowded for room between GALLANT CAVALIER and TELECOM MISSILE, both of which shifted ground. MASTERWORK was then ridden along to obtain a forward positon and for the majority of the race travelled wide and without cover.
From wide barriers, TELECOM MISSILE and ONE STEP AHEAD were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Passing the 1000 Metres, BEAUTY CHEERS was awkwardly placed outside the heels of CARRY THE DIAMOND when being steadied to obtain cover behind that horse.
Near the 950 Metres, TAKE WHAT YOU NEED was bumped by WINNING STRIKES which shifted out after being brushed by SUNNY AND GOLD.
Passing the 700 Metres, TELECOM MISSILE was taken wider by BEAUTY CHEERS which shifted out away from the heels of MASTERWORK.
At the entrance to the Straight, TELECOM MISSILE and BEAUTY CHEERS bumped and raced tight as TELECOM MISSILE shifted out away from the heels of TAKE WHAT YOU NEED.
TAKE WHAT YOU NEED was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and again approaching the 200 Metres. TAKE WHAT YOU NEED (L Hewitson) was then shifted to the outside of MASTERWORK passing the 200 Metres to obtain clear running which resulted in TELECOM MISSILE momentarily racing tight inside the heels of BEAUTY CHEERS. L Hewitson was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 300 Metres, ONE STEP AHEAD shifted out and inconvenienced TRONIC MIGHTY.
After the 300 Metres, TOWARDS SUCCESS raced tight inside the heels of GOOD BEAUTY which was improving into tight running inside CARRY THE DIAMOND.
Passing the 150 Metres, TOWARDS SUCCESS was shifted to the outside of SUNNY AND GOLD to continue improving.
Near the 50 Metres, GALLANT CAVALIER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was directed to the outside of CARRY THE DIAMOND and then over the concluding stages was awkwardly placed behind MASTERWORK. Because of this, GALLANT CAVALIER was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
After the race, Z Purton was not able to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of BEAUTY CHEERS. He said BEAUTY CHEERS came under pressure rounding the Home Turn and then was very disappointing in the manner in which it failed to respond to his riding in the Straight. The performance of BEAUTY CHEERS, which finished towards the rear of the field as favourite, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEAUTY CHEERS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY CHEERS immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.
Also after the race, M F Poon stated that WINNING STRIKES was very disappointing in today’s race. He said the horse travelled well when ridden outside the lead, however, after being placed under pressure in the Straight did not finish the race off. A veterinary inspection of WINNING STRIKES immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of TELECOM MISSILE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
BEAUTY CHEERS, GOOD BEAUTY and ONE STEP AHEAD were sent for sampling.
