Background:
Kunieda studied to be a vet at university. He joined horse racing as a work rider back in 1978 and obtained his JRA training licence in 1989. He has over 1,000 wins across his career. The best horse he has trained so far is champion Almond Eye, who won Japan’s Triple Tiara (Oka Sho, Yushun Himba and Shuka Sho) in 2018. Almond Eye twice won the Japan Cup and twice won the Tenno Sho (Autumn). Kunieda also trained Apapane, his first winner of Japan’s Triple Tiara, who won five Group 1 races overall. He also trained Matsurida Gogh (2007 Arima Kinen), Black Hawk (2001 Yasuda Kinen), Danon Platina (2014 Asahi Futurity Stakes), Akaitorino Musume (2021 Shuka Sho) and Stellenbosch (2024 Oka Sho) as his standout performers.
